artcrystals:LONG POST I am so sorry. In this installment of Face Value AU (aka no such thing as titan shifters), Marlowe’s inability to properly feign respect for his superior officers (in the face of blatant corruption and misconduct) has finally caught up with him in a way his captain can’t shelter him from — mouthing off to someone above Reiner’s rank. Ten lashes to you for insubordination, Marlowe.Reiner gets taken to task for it too — although he excels at cementing the loyalty of his squad members, his tendency to coddle them gets him into hot water whenever it turns out they can’t function properly outside of his supervision/help/protection. His punishment — having to see his troops take lashes for his own failings — is unfortunately a very fitting one, and super effective. In times like this, it’s the job of a good second in command to be able to recognize their CO’s shortcomings and step in — so while Boris is hardly any happier about getting to beat his subordinates than Reiner is, he knows at a glance that Reiner isn’t remotely capable of raising his arm to strike Bertholdt, and the last thing their squad needs at this point is to call attention to their captain’s little fraternization problem. -- source link
