August 2015 - Bearpaw / Smallanthus uvedalius / Polymnia uvedaliaThere appears to be some confusion re: the proper latin name for this plant. Pictures and descriptions are identical. Whatever the heck it is, it’s a native perennial here and another tough, reliable plant. It grows in our lower hill area (fairly dry) down to the river (wet, pictured here). I’m actually standing in the river facing north for this photo. Very cheerful, and they can get HUGE - 9 ft or so. They kind of show up out of nowhere to suddenly put on a late summer / fall show. -- source link
