jackthevulture:dragon-in-a-fez:people who identify with httyd1 Stoick scare the everloving fuck out of me.the sentiment you’re agreeing with here is basically, “my son, whom I’ve never treated with anything approaching understanding or respect, is growing up and going through massive changes in his life and has just changed his mind about wanting to do something I’ve spent 12 years telling him he can’t do. the appropriate reaction is to not listen to a word he says, just like always.”Were we watching the same movie?Cuz before this moment, the only interaction we saw between Hiccup and Stoick was actually kind of surprisingly RESERVED given the circumstances.Stoick wanted Hiccup inside because he believed that he would be LITERALLY KILLED if he let his child run around outside when dragons were attacking. Hiccup disobeys this wish. And goes outside. And he nearly gets himself killed. Think Simba going to the elephant graveyard. Though its implied Hiccup has done this before. So think Simba going to the elephant graveyard after Mufasa gave him the “You scared the shit out of me” speech. Not to mention, that because Hiccup went outside, and got attacked, and had to be saved. A large torch was destroyed. And it rolled through the village and destroyed a bunch of stuff. And a bunch of dragons got away. And they took some of the vikings livestock with them. Its not like they can just pop over to the livestock auction and buy a few more. And Hiccups response is to make jokes. So what does Stoick do? He gives Hiccup a stern talking to.Thats about it.He even says at the end that HE is going to clean up Hiccups mess.Hiccup fucked up. He fucked up big.Literally the next time we see them together is this scene. Literally the NEXT time Stoick sees his son is THIS scene. Hiccup has been begging his whole life “Let me fight dragons!” Stoick has been telling him no because he believes that if he lets his son fight dragons, he will lose him. He doesnt want to lose his son. But he decides to TRUST Hiccup and finally give him what he wants, what hes been asking for. And Hiccup immediately shoots him down. Now, Hiccup has his reasons for doing so. Hiccup was right, after all.But.Stoick deliberated all day about this, and probably felt like he was about to make his son VERY happy. And instead Hiccup pulls a complete 180 on what hes been begging Stoick for over and over, right up until their LITERAL last conversation. So he thinks long and hard about it. The very idea that he chose to allow Hiccup to do this shows an amount of respect and belief in his son. Even though he was afraid, he decided to let his son do what he has been asking for.Stoick must have been freakin dumbfounded. And terribly frustrated. Is there a lack of communication here? Yes there is. Is Stoick perfect? No he is not. He is a person. He only has one child. He is a single parent. He is still learning. Hiccup isnt perfect either. But that is part of what this movie is about. Both Stoick and Hiccup are very similar, very stubborn people who have misconceptions about each other. Communication is hard and they struggle with it. But Stoick is not a villain here. The point of the movie was to show that Stoick could learn. And that their bond could be mended. Parents are absolutely meant to identify with Stoick. And learn something from him. -- source link
