In the second grade, the free time we were given was entirely devoted to unlocking the secrets of Draw 50 Famous Cartoons! , the oversized, mustard~colored, seminal instructional book by Lee J. Ames. Two friends and myself would be huddled in a corner of the schoolroom, feverishly laboring over our lumpy, misshapen renditions of ‘The Lockhorns’ and 'Andy Capp’.
