cleolinda:changelingupkeep:sourcedumal:changelingupkeep:These writers are awesome. And wtf. It seems like “respecting women in the slightest” = “emasculated” to some people. Who must have mush for brains. And can we talk about how black women are always fucking described as “emasculating” the men in their lives by virtue of EXISTING as human beings?Reblogging for added great point. Seriously now that I think about it, white woman characters are FAR less likely to be called out as ‘emasculating’ unless in a explicitly romantic relationship where the male gave up something big for a compromise. Still messed up, but there is a much larger threshold of “tolerance” on the part of the misogynistic assholes there. Yet with black women it’s “He’s showing her the slightest smidgen of respect? EMASCULATION!”Ugh so this is a huge ass bunch of racism in this as well as sexism.I think a lot of the “emasculation” bullshit may come from how Ichabod seems to gravitate towards leaders—i.e., someone he can follow and serve as a soldier—and, with ~General Washington Omg~ gone, he’s transferred his attachment to Abbie. I mean, notice how much more often he calls her “Lieutenant” than “Miss Mills.” By the end of—what, the first episode?—he’s already bringing her coffee. And I LOVE that. If it wasn’t emasculating when he was Washington’s secret-shenanigans right-hand man or whatever, it’s not emasculating that he’s now Abbie’s. -- source link
