This is where I go to have a to talk with the girl in the mirror. She struggles with accepting herself, loving herself, worrying about being socially accepted, controlling her brain power with all its ups and downs, and conquering dysphoria whenever it rears its ugly head. I have to remind her that we haven’t been on this journey for two years yet! There are many MANY changes ahead that will make everyday joy, acceptance, and self love easier to acquire. I also have to remind her that comments like “you’re perfect the way you are” do not mean “there’s something wrong with your head if you think otherwise”. I know in my head that my outward appearance isn’t where it needs to be yet in order for me to feel like “me” and that others have good intent with that comment. I also have to remember I have a lot more mental growth ahead of me before I fully accept myself. The journey is young and there’s a lot more to accomplish. These talks with myself help me get through the tough days no one ever sees. It took so much time before I could even look myself in the eye with love.
