laoih: thevalkyriedirective: I absolutely adore this random little scene for absolutely smashing our preconceptions of gender. Here we have a male crewmember who’s pregnant, and it’s the male crewmembers who are throwing him a baby shower. As always, I only wish they’d gone further with it. As much as I adore the way DS9 flavoured its universe with snippets like this, I can’t help but look forward to the day when this sort of thing doesn’t just feature unseen minor characters. Especially considering almost all of the Trek series have had an actress become pregnant during the course of the series (though the only one who they incorporated it into the story for was Nana Visitor) - why not give a male character a ‘pregnancy storyline’ for a change? While I agree that it would have been very interesting to see Vilix’pran on screen, I always feel a bit uncomfortable when I read stuff like “I wish they’d gone further with it” and “why not do this or do that”.It’s easier said than done. The creative power behind a show is not the same as the money-giving power. Even if they want to, sometimes they just can’t do it. When they made the episode “Rejoined”, with the kiss of Jadzia and Lenara, they got hundreds of angry phone calls. There were a lot of parents that didn’t want their children to see this, now think about how they would react to a longer male pregnancy storyline. It’s easy for us to say “why not do it”. We can write fanficiton about it and draw fanarts, but we are independant. Showmakers are not. It’s still difficult today, it was difficult in the 90ties. Going further would be great, but I think it’s a very idealstic wish. They need the viewers, even the stupid and intolerant ones. Little scenes like above allowed them to pass their message of tolerance in the future without scaring off the viewers that don’t want to see it. Well I’m sorry to say, if you’re not interested in idealistic wish making then you’re sort of following the wrong blog … I don’t see any problem with expressing my desires or suggestions for what I would have liked to see, in fact, I downright enjoy it! Particularly in a community environment, when other people can join in and say ‘yeah me too!’ or offer up their own suggestions, desires and wishes. Me saying I wish they’d done something or why not do something is different from me saying I expect that they’d actually do it - and it’s also not complaining that they didn’t do it! I understand perfectly that media is a product of its time, and that the creative team has to answer to a network or studio who’s more interested in the bottom line. I honestly don’t see why me expressing my personal opinion warranted a rebuke from you? -- source link
