Without it most states would have no say what so ever in the election. Democracy is mob rule. Our constitutional republic guarantees the voices of the minority are heard. This is a dumb argument. Everyone’s votes should be equal, your vote shouldn’t get to count more because you have the misfortune of living in some sparsely population dump. This is why I hate the Senate, the fact that people in Vermont and people in California have the same amount of representation in the senate is dumb as shit. California’s population is almost 70 times bigger. This makes sure everyone’s vote is equal, lmao. Can you read? Can YOU read? I clearly just pointed out how a vote in Vermont matters 70 times more than a vote in California when it comes to controlling the senate. How is that fair? No, it doesn’t lol. You fundamentally don’t understand how this works, my guy. What you “pointed out” means shit because what you “pointed out” is completely false. The current system overwhelmingly favors less populous states. All the states with 3 electoral votes like WY have about 200,000 people per vote. States like FL, NY, TX and CA all have over 700,000 per electoral vote. That doesn’t seem like equal representation. That’s why democrats can win the popular vote and lose the electoral college. There is no reason why the 8 million people in NYC don’t get an equal say as the 9 million in all MT, WY, ID, ND, SD, KS and NE. NY state has 29 electoral votes with a population of 19 million. MT, WY, ID, SD, ND, NE, KS, AK, AL, UT have about 20 million people but have 49 electoral votes. Big unpopulated states get more votes per person than states with large populations. So let me get this straight - you’re salty that the population of ONE state doesn’t have an “equal” say as the entire population of FIVE states? Without the electoral college, Texas and California would decide every election. You’d have a handful of states deciding what the rest of the country has to accept, because pure democracy is mob rule. You’re an idiot. We’re done here. The Senate was put in place to protect less populous states.that’s the pointGeez someone put in the “Thats the joke” picture@minarchist forgets we are all different states with different laws, not one big land mass with the same laws. That is why we are the united STATES of america. Hilary Clinton only won 19 states, and Trump won 31. It doesn’t matter the those 31 had less population because the majority of the States chose Donald Trump. If we just had it by population, major super cities would be choosing our election. These people legit want two states like California and New York to determine our elections, just because it is their side winning. 2 states should not determine the outcome of the 48 others. Same as the minority of states should not pick the outcome of the majority of states because they have bigger population. It’s a catch 22 and neither system is perfect or fair. The Electoral College has always been favored by the smaller states and conservatives, and even then, it’s bad at doing it. -- source link
