Widely varied in colours, size, strengths and character they all shared two remarkable traits. Strong wings that carried them above the highest mountains and the capability to breath fire.These magnificent creatures were both feared and admired but the bravest men and women found ways to interact with them and even train them. The earliest records of methods to train dragons date back to the 5th century. It seems in these early centuries, humans and dragons had found a way to live peacefully and even beneficially alongside each other.To the misfortune of all the dragons and their riders, England was constantly invaded with foreign forces who were unaware of the right approach towards dragons. This caused the reputation of the dragons to obscure as they were now mainly seen as bloodthirsty monsters. Instead of dragon-riders, people were raised to become dragon-hunters and by the 10th century all the dragons had been killed. The once so admired animals lived on in tales and legends but after a few ages had past and proof of their existence faded, people begin to doubt if they were nothing but a myth.However, hidden under dust and in a old chest in a Welsh castle lay the last remains of these wonderful creatures. Five dragon-eggs and a handful of scrolls containing information. According to legend these had ones belonged to the great King Arthur, and were passed on from father to son until they came in possession of Jasper Tudor. When Jasper and his nephew Henry Tudor were driven into exile in 1471, they brought along these last eggs and the scrolls to Brittany. After much devotion, the eggs hatched and the dragons were raised and trained alongside Henry. An indestructible bond was forged between the dragons and the young man and his uncle.In 1485 Henry prepared to sail back to England to conquer the throne of the land he had once called home. His rival, Richard III, took little interest in the rumours that had flown from across the Canal. Dragons had been gone for so long, he and many others believed them to be nothing more but fairy-tale monsters. Horribly painful must have been Richard’s realization during the Battle at Bosworth, when he thought he could already taste victory, five dragons blazed through the sky as flaming shadows, destroying all of his forces.Henry was proclaimed King of England, the seventh of his name and his dragons The Great Five. The new king brought peace to a war-torn country and restored the position of the dragon as companion of mankind. ♚THE GREAT FIVE ♚♚AERON m.  Celtic war-god, -meaning slaughter-With his blood-red wings and pitch-black scales, he was feared for both his gruesome appearance and his cruel character. His unpredictable nature made him difficult to rely on, but an excellent ally on the battlefield.♚AFALLON: m.  a legendary place where King Arthur rested to heal from his injuries, -meaning apple tree-The youngest and smallest, yet most athletic in his movements. His skin was as green as the venom in his teeth. Though he could barely roast a goat, his poisonous bite was strong enough to kill a full grown bear. He was the only one of the five dragons that died during the Battle at Bosworth.♚EURDDOLYN: f.  -golden ring-Believed to be Afallon’s older sister, as they were very much alike in shape and skills. Though her trust was easily gained, once broken, it could never be mended. Her teeth contained a different poison, one that killed it’s victims with such slow and heinous agony, many pleaded for death to come hours before they finally perished.♚MERERID: f.  welsh form of Margaret -meaning pearl- Deep-blue, smooth scaled, she blazed through the sky faster and more gracious than any other. As devoted and protective as the woman she was named after, she appeared to be more approachable than most of her kind, yet could be dangerously vicious when guarding her loved ones. She was especially fond of Henry and he of her.♚TRAHAEARN: m.  -very much like iron- Silver/copper scaled, with spikes all over his body and large ones on his head. Aggressive and extremely difficult to control and answered best to Jasper Tudor. He was revered to as The Iron Terror by the enemy, yet each man loyal to the Tudors could rely on his protection.Sadly the last dragon died with the last Tudor, but that is a story for another time.for my dear solenne, thank you for everything you’ve done for me, honey! -- source link
