Got my musket today! Finally it came in the mail today, my replica Model 1766 Charleville musket from Veteran Arms. I must say I am very impressed for what I got considering it was significantly cheaper than a Pedersoli. In addition, Indian made replicas tend to have a bad reputation (mostly unfounded). It’s a smoothbore, .69 caliber. One thing I expected the manufacturer to really skimp on quality was with the stock, made of teak which is a cheap hardwood. However the stock is finished well, and has a lovely stain. All the metal work looks sturdy, and the flint/frizzen sparks well. Unlike many other Indian made replicas, Veteran Arms finishes the stock, hardens the frizzen, and drills the vent hole/times it with the lock in the US. Thus, quality is significantly better than other companies. One interesting feature is that crude indentations were roughly cut into the barrel bands, which line up with the “front sight” (which is actually the bayonet lug). Soldiers often used the bayonet lug as a sight for aiming. Of course, with no rear sights, accuracy decreases because if your eye is off just a little bit, either vertically or horizontally, your aim could be off high or low, or off to the left or right. It was not uncommon for soldiers to take a knife and roughly cut lines in the barrel bands to serve as a crude rear sight. Veteran Arms did that for you! There are a few minor flaws. The trigger pull is kind of tight, the lock is kind of tight and a little difficult to pull back, probably just needs worn in some. The barrel bands don’t want to come off easily, but they probably just need loosened up and will come off easier after the first field stripping. On the nearest barrel band the pin which holds the band in place is too long to allow the band to slip off. That’s nothing I can’t fix by filing or grinding it down. The only thing I’m really disappointed about is I ordered a bayonet with it, and the bayonet scabbard is really cheap, flimsy, and it seems like it will just fall apart on a whim. Shipping took a while, about 6 weeks. Other than that I have no complaints. To give you an idea how long this smokepole is, I’m around 5′10′’ or 5′11″, standing on end as if I were loading it, the muzzle comes up to my chin. I wanted a nice long musket to compensate for my small penis however. I will post better quality pictures soon. Can’t wait to shoot it! -- source link
