saotome-michi: Danzi Danzi, 31, has been living alone now for around 10 months when a sudden call from her mother brings back memories of why she moved out in the first place. In her eponymous comic, Danzi uses her personal diaries to recount her experiences with abuse growing up. An instant hit in South Korea, this comic confronts issues such as sexism and domestic violence in a way that’s inviting, albeit heartbreaking. I wanted to give a shout out to this comic because it’s one of my personal favorites and not enough people know about it. There are many things I like about it, but the strongest part of Danzi is probably her voice- she recounts her experiences with both frank honesty and a wry twist of humor, while also never hesitating to reflect on herself, her feelings, actions, and overall progress. Usually these reflections are full of a sincere kind of indecisiveness that I find very realistic, as I for one can never talk about myself with any degree of certainty.
