fuckyeahrenaissancewomen:fictional biopics that deserve their time in the sun - WE SISTERSmary i - sarah bolgerelizabeth i - sophie turnerwe sisters traces the relationship between mary and elizabeth tudor beginning in 1536 with the respective deaths of katherine of aragon and anne boleyn. mary’s feelings towards her younger sister start to soften as they are both left motherless, and the warmth between the two of them grows. we then follow elizabeth’s childhood, in particular her education and her fascination with her mother, and mary’s growing role in court. halfway through the film, henry viii’s reign comes to an end with his death. the two sisters begin to grow apart through their brother edward vi’s reign due to their religious differences and elizabeth’s relationship with thomas seymour. still, some affection remains between them until edward passes away. mary’s throne is then usurped by lady jane grey, and though she regains it mary becomes more and more paranoid by the idea of threat. at this point, elizabeth and mary’s relationship has completely soured. the film climaxes with mary’s marriage to philip of spain, sir thomas wyatt’s protestant rebellion, and elizabeth’s imprisonment in the tower of london. it ends as mary frees elizabeth from the tower, saving her from execution, and leaves her in house arrest at woodstock to await her time to be queen. -- source link
