fuckyeahjohnheartfield:archives-dada:George Grosz, “Daum” marries her pedantic automaton “George” in May 1920, John Heartfield is very glad of it, 1920, Watercolor and collage. 42 x 30.2 cm. Galerie Nierendorf, Berlin. This picture is, among other things, a wedding announcement. “Daum” was one of George Grosz’s nicknames for his wife Eva. They had two sons and stayed married until Grosz’s death in 1959.Exactly why “John Heartfield is very glad of it” is a question we can’t answer; it was probably some sort of private joke between the three of them. Eva had some mixed feelings about Heartfield—she complained in a letter to her brother-in-law that Heartfield’s adoration of Grosz was bad for Grosz’s ego, and there are also reports that she was annoyed by Heartfield’s tendency to be constantly underfoot. We don’t know of any evidence that Heartfield didn’t like Eva Grosz. Heartfield and his wife Lena named their daughter Eva, who was born the same year this picture was made. He had already given his first child Tom the middle name George.Grosz and Heartfield were together almost all the time during this period, and Grosz named several artworks after Heartfield, most notably “‘The Convict’: Monteur John Heartfield after Franz Jung’s attempt to get him up on his feet”—allegedly a portrait of Heartfield, but one which bears a much greater resemblance to Grosz himself. -- source link
