Sign, Brown’s Restaurant - Charbroiled Steaks, Fine Seafood, Sparta, North Carolina, 2014. There is no particular reason for this specific sign, but one of the things I have been pondering is the future of independently owned restaurants, and independently owned and operated business in general, after the pandemic has receded. In small towns located in remote nooks of the country, a description that most certainly fits Sparta, these restaurants are among the few remnants of non-monopoly capitalism as well as centers of local social life. After two months without revenue, likely followed by stratospheric levels of unemployment cutting back on “eating out” once something like normalcy returns, how many will still continue to serve charbroiled steaks, seafood, or any other food? Chains will undoubtedly continue to serve their homogenized slop, but what about independents? -- source link
