‘My three days with David Tennant' So, after around six years of adoring David Tennant and considering him my favourite actor in the world, I finally managed to meet him. I was lucky enough to get a front row ticket for his penultimate performance as Richard II at the Barbican Theatre in London, so, of course I travelled all the way back to my former home from Berlin, Germany for this opportunity of a lifetime. London and David Tennant are the biggest loves of my life, so, this trip was bound to be absolutely amazing from start to end. On the day of the play, his performance, needless to say was powerful, flawless, raw at times, funny, charming, sublime, touching… but, although I think he is an underrated actor, for most people it is quite obvious just how bloody talented this man is. Sitting on the left side of the front row was perfect, as every time he walked to the front to do his speeches, he went right to that very spot in front of me, so I could marvel at his beauty in all its glory. The man is even more gorgeous in the flesh than on tv, the big screen or photos, even more gorgeous as Richard II than usual, with his slender body moving so elegantly, so delicately. The clothes on him were to die for, he reminded me of David Bowie (another idol of mine) in that famous 'Hunky Dory’ album cover, simply delicious. Long wavy golden brown silky locks adorning his head, the light elevating him to an ethereal kind of beauty, Christ-like, angelic. Those long elegant fingers of his adorned by rings, by golden fingernails, by feminine mannerisms. He conjured up that androgynous essence just perfectly, the 'guy liner’ merely enhancing his huge and soulful chocolate-coloured eyes, his lips as luscious as ever… and then THAT kiss between Richard and Aumerle! Words (well, polite ones) can’t describe what that scene did to me. I was not just mesmerised by his beauty but moved by the story, perfectly executed by all the cast, but, let’s be honest, my eyes, my heart, my mind were all focused on him, on the magnificent Tennant. I enjoyed this amazing experience on the third day, my last day sharing the same air than Tennant, on that last day he graciously signed my program, but I had already met the man for the two days before that. See, I knew I wouldn’t get the chance to get close to him if I joined the crowds waiting for him outside the theatre until after the play was finished, so, I went there two days before. It was the very first time I could see him in the flesh, right in front of me, so, of course the moment I first laid my eyes on him I was ready to pass out from the excitement and nervousness, I nearly fainted, but I mustered up the energy to ask him for a photograph and of course he very kindly agreed. Other actors might have just ignored me, but no, not him, he is, without a doubt the MOST gracious, kind and generous actor anyone could worship. He is lovely, just lovely, down to earth, self-deprecating, charming, funny and warm, there aren’t enough compliments in the vocabulary to describe that man. I went back there the next day and I asked for another photo (greedy, I know) he said “Sure!” again, only this time, my friend’s camera decided to play up, so no photo could be taken, so, he told me that he would come back to try again. Now, I KNOW he has said the same thing to others with similar problems and he has always kept his promise, he does always remember to go back to give the distraught person another chance to try. Luckily enough, it only took seconds for the camera to work, so, he posed again with me and a photo was achieved. I saw him interact with every person the same way, with warmth, with sincerity, with joy, with humour, with humility, like equals, not like people 'below his star status’ like some other actors tend to do. He appreciates the effort fans make, he is grateful for the applause, for the attention, for the love of the crowd. And I am grateful for his existence, for the happiness that he has brought into my life with his performances, for giving me a bit of his time when he didn’t have to, for his talent and his humanity and of course, for that wonderful heart-melting smile of his. Elton John said it best: “How wonderful life is while you are in the world”.
