It is a wild garden, wine chilled in tubs on a hot day, dirt on your feet and under your nails, a dip in the lake every day you can, a wilderness out your doorstep, getting veggies from a farm each week, dinners made from the soil that surrounds you, unironed linens waving in the breeze that flows off the lake to the west. It is warm meals on cold nights and cool meals on warm nights. ⠀⠀It is a less is more mentality. It is living in the present but preparing for the season ahead while enjoying the season behind us. It is vintage cars and old tractors, Sunday drives, and taking our time whenever life allows. It is closed up towns at 10 PM and the corner bar where everyone knows your name and order. ⠀⠀It is the cold and wild winters we feel ready for so we can see those we love again and enjoy quieter days again. It is the heat of summer when life is abundant and alive. It is the snow-covered pines and the silence of the woods after a heavy snow. It is the cool lake covering us on the hottest days and the silence it brings us. ⠀⠀It is high and low. It is a dip in the lake. It is sweaters and shorts. It is dirty boots from the day’s adventures but a crisp shirt on top. It is a jean jacket for the chilly evenings. It is the worn-in shirt and your favorite jeans. ⠀⠀It is the blowing rye, the golden leaves, the blossoms of spring, the morels hiding in the woods, the first trillium, the white bark of the birch, the blackberries coming on, the maples that flow with sap, the moss fluffy and green, the apples and cherry blossoms, and it is the precious hemlocks and huge pines. All of it coloring our world in every season. ⠀⠀It is the preparation for the unexpected. It is fresh sawn wood and a warm fire on a stormy winter night. It is lilacs and lavender. Each sweet scent a fleeting moment in our days. ⠀⠀It is a life that begs for presence and slowness. We move with the seasons and with the awareness that it is the most precious gift in our life.
