fuckyeahavengingarcher:Kate: Why do you still have a phone with a cord on the wall?Clint: How did you know it was me?Kate: Who else would be calling your sad ass?Clint: I— what? Lots of people. Captain America, one time.Kate: Did you have to go to Gowanus for tape or—Clint: Kate, shut up and come get me right now. I got knocked out and this girl— Girl’s been kidnapped and we gotta follow ‘em.This scene pretty perfectly encapsulates the differences between the two Hawkeyes. Kate, in costume with a hand on her hip, is in the perfect position to poke fun. Clint, undressed and caught off guard, is frantic and worried. Nevertheless, he rises to Kate’s bait—Captain America, one time. He would have probably continued the conversation like that, had he not remembered the urgency of the situation. But in any other scenario, Clint would be doing exactly what Kate is. If Cap, or Iron Man, or anyone else, had called him and asked for help, or seen him around Avengers Tower, Clint would be poking fun. He’d be the one raising an eyebrow at suggestions and poking holes in plans. Clint is usually the Lancer to someone else’s Big Damn Hero. But in his book, he gets to—or has to be?—the Big Damn Hero. And Kate gets to be the Lancer. So maybe in contrasting the two Hawkeyes, we’re really learning just how similar they are. This scene isn’t just about that, though. Even with Kate poking fun, Clint puts his foot down. As much as Kate is his partner, and he respects her, there’s also going to be a point where something has to get done and the banter has to be put on hold. Kate seems to realize that, too, but Clint still reminds her a couple times in this issue to come get him, or to just drive, dammit—keeping her on task, because despite his questionable life choices, he’s still the boss. And it’s his responsibility to make sure they get done what they need to, or what Clint feels they need to. From Hawkeye Volume 4 #03 (Matt Fraction & David Aja) -- source link
