sartle-blog: The Sea of Ice by Caspar David Friedrich at Kunsthalle Hamburg ❄️ Since much of America is experiencing it’s coldest snap in a generation, we thought we’d take a look at one of the coldest paintings of a generation. In 1823-24, German Romantic artist Caspar David Friedrich painted this derelict ship lately embarked on a north pole voyage only to have met its watery grave, the ice jutting over it like a monumental tomb. Interpretations abound, but the clearest theme is that of man overpowered by natural forces beyond his control. While a grand theme, it’s not exactly comforting, and the painting went unsold until after his death in 1840. Interestingly, the unique composition is thought to have been an influence in the design of the Sydney Opera House. -- source link
