rivjudephoenix:It was reported that the Children of God used River’s death as a tool to brainwash people into remaining in the cult. Convincing them that that’s what will happen to you if you leave. But I recently read this comment, and found that to some, he was a hero:“I was born and raised in the same cult as River Phoenix and I know the toll it takes on you to have been born and brought up in what was basically a horribly abusive mind control experiment with a healthy dose of sex abuse thrown in for good measure. But even though River’s life ended in a tragic way he was always an inspiration to all of us kids who were still stuck in the cult. He made it out and he made something of himself and he made beautiful movies and for kids growing up like we did in a horrible situation against our will we needed a hero and he was that for us. I only wish he’d lived long enough to understand how special he was” -- source link
