maza-dohta:http://mazadohta.bigcartel.comfair & lovely, a skin lightening cream popular in south asia, prides itself on its purpose, which is “to inspire women to go for their dreams, even if they were at odds with what society expected them to do” - fair & lovely website.while this company claims to uphold the unique identity of each woman, they continue to create ads which are specifically designed to target the insecurities of dark skinned girls by perpetuating the backwards belief that the lighter your skin is, the happier your life will be. “brown girl, you are lovely in every shade” is a poem i wrote to take back the belief that skin color, regardless of its shade, is something to be ashamed of.growing up outside of india taught me much about racism, but nothing prepared me for the way i was treated when i moved back home for the first time. my dark skin even got me the nickname “ kali billi” ( black cat ) among those i considered friends.it was one thing to feel out of place back at home in america, but to feel unwanted in my own motherland was a whole other kind of pain; and it took a long time for me to learn how to love myself again.but i am not ashamed of my skin anymore. nor am i “ pretty for a dark girl” and i am sure as hell not worried about laying out in the sun for hours until my skin glistens with my love for it. my mother did not raise me full of color so i could dilute myself for anyone.remember, you weren’t born with the sun folded into your skin so you could live your life in the shade. you were born to shine. don’t ever forget this. -- source link
