AN ASKOS IN THE FORM OF A MYTHICAL BEAST L. 17 cm. Clay, brown-black glaze, grey-brown coating.Western Greek, mid to 2nd half 4th cent. B.C.Slender vessel with pointed ends, a round filling hole on the top and a spout on the right back end. A shrew-like head with long, slightly concave ears, pointed muzzle, spherical eyes and long, arched eyebrows forms the front of the vessel. A ribbed ridge runs from the forehead to the filling hole, and from the filling hole to the fishtail. The body rests on long legs. Incised tendrils with painted ivy leaves, now darkend, decorate the back. A grey-brown coating covers the entire body except for the underside, which is glazed dark brown and has a central rib. Reassembled, seams sealed. Restorations to right foot. (Source) -- source link
