Ancient Greek Sport - Pankration One of the events in the famous Olympics of ancient Greece was the Pankration. A brutal combination boxing and wrestling, it can be thought of as a more violent version of today’s MMA where the only rule is that participants aren’t allowed to gouge out the other’s eye. Anything short of that was fair game: hair-pulling, finger-snapping, even grabbing the groin. Spartans notoriously did not compete in this event because if they lost they might have to yield or “submit” in order to not die in the match, something that the Spartan code of honor strictly forbade.
