✨ #flashbackfriday first slide of my aunt @clipz19 , Jayah, and I from few years ago. Frontline workers have not stopped working. Like my aunt, they are still out here providing relief, support, resources, & services to our most vulnerable communities. Our education system is filled with inequities & infrastructure that do not work. It was made even more apparent when NYC went into lockdown last March leaving many low income students and parents figuring out how to do “online” school. Inequities were even more present when many of these household could not even access or afford internet, when they had no access to tablets or laptops, or if instructions were given they were in English and non English speaking households were forgotten. Many were already dealing with family members who had Covid. Many were figuring out how to pay rent because head of household was unemployed. Many were struggling to have consistent meals ( hence the importance of school meals). This was on top on the already daily injustice many of our communities face to police, racial profiling, ICE and other systemic racism. It was front line workers like my aunt who had to step up when the city/state/gov failed to do so. She was calling parents and guiding them on how to set up Internet & guide them in Spanish how to request tablets and use them. She was helping distribute food. She was leading a team of school staff even with budget cuts. She has been advocating for better initiatives & policies. Last week she distributed 200 masks to parents & students who were returning for programs. She has shown us how work can get down when bureaucracy is not in the way. She always has taught me about the importance & value of children & their parents/guardians. She is incredible & like many frontline workers she is exhausted. It shouldn’t come down to frontline workers to hold it down ( with little resources and funding) , there should have been an equipped city/state/gov. Today & everyday I am grateful for her. Frontline workers deserve our gratitude & support. Remember COVID-19 did not disappear it’s still here and in alarming numbers.
