Ivory panel from a Byzantine diptych, depicting the Archangel Michael holding an orb. It is thought that he is presenting the orb to the Emperor Justinian (r. 527-565), who would have appeared on the lost other wing of the diptych. An accompanying Greek inscription reads “Receive the one before you, even knowing his guilt.” Artist unknown; made in Constantinople, ca. 525-550. Now in the British Museum.
