amnhnyc:The Museum’s Apatosaurus, collected in the late 1890s, was the first sauropod dinosaur ever mounted anywhere. Museum preparators labored over the specimen for years before it finally went on view in 1905. These towering dinosaurs (the Museum’s specimen is 86 feet in length) are among the biggest terrestrial animals in the history of the Earth, and could weigh up to 20 tons. Apatosaurus was a herbivore, and likely ate up to 880 pounds of food per day. -- source link
