sagethotxicroak:specklefreckle15:angel-starbeam:pumpkinminette:thurisazsalail:blackqueerblog:So answer is yes we do want an Indian Cinderella nextfuck yeah I mean can you IMAGINE the dresses?! just anarkali style alonei meanany of thesecould easily fit the profileFuck yeah i want an Indian CinderellaYes.DISNEY P L E A S Eooooh! what else could we do?As far as I can recall, one of the oldest known variations of the Cinderella folktale can be traced back to China. Folktales and fairy tales, like myths and deities and even whole religions, spread. If Buddhism made its way to China, and even further to Japan, do you really think it’s that far of a stretch that a Cinderella-like story made its way down to India? But also, why is it such a terrible thing that we have an Indian Cinderella or a black Little Mermaid? If it’s because you “want to keep the integrity of the original property” I have to say that’s a pretty weak argument. After all, at least in the case of Cinderella, the animated movie was based on a fairy tale and there’s historical precedent for that story to be set anywhere and any time you want it to be. As for the Little Mermaid, is it really so hard to imagine a black person in Europe? When, from likely as far back as the Roman Empire, and having clear pictorial and written evidence that they were there during the Medieval Era, black people were clearly present? Even if Andersen himself were to have a negative opinion on the matter, I don’t think it makes any difference. His stories are clearly based on the folktale and fairy tale formula, and should be taken as such—-thus, again, it doesn’t matter where you set the story, or how the characters look in the film. Even setting aside historical precedence, why does it matter how the characters look? The answer is—-it might even enhance the story, as in the example in the tweet provided above! So yes this is a thorough endorsement of Ariel being played by a black actor and making Cinderella set in India! -- source link
