medievalpoc:cafecheznino:dynastylnoire:medievalpoc:Link to the Buzzfeed Article (submitted via fanmail)Links to Artemis’s Tumblr and FacebookHow about we all make a commitment to creating safer spaces for cosplayers of color, especially Black women*? Because that article’s comments section is a mess. I’ve posted before about the racist harassment people of color are subjected to at Renaissance Faires, SCA events, SFF conventions, and other fan-related events. White SFF fans, SCA members, and con attendees should consider how they can make these fan spaces safer for fans of color, because we should not have to face the unfair scrutiny, microaggressions, and outright harassment alone. Courage and the strength to withstand racist harassment should not be a prerequisite for participating in these events. Fans of color deserve to have fun, too!* I am a person of color, but I am not Black. I have been personally subjected to the “not historically accurate!” comments, remarks that my race is not “correct” to play a character, and had “approved list” of types of characters I “should” or “can” be suggested to me based on my physical appearance (among other nastiness). However, this is not comparable to the rather particular hellscape some white fans decide to turn their “fun” activity into for Black participants. I am firmly committed as a non-Black person of color to supporting and doing what I can to create safer spaces for Black fans to participate fully and without fear of harassment in these types of events. She’s not black? OkI think medievalpoc is saying that they themselves are not Black. That is what I am saying. I’m really sorry for any confusion, but a lot of people assume that I am Black. I think it’s important that I am held accountable for any statements I make, and that there are many topics and discussions I should not be involved in, or questions people should not be asking me in particular. I don’t want anyone to believe that I speak for Black people, that would be extremely inappropriate. -- source link
