The Great Pyramid of Giza was built around 2550 B.C. by Pharaoh Khufu to serve as a tomb. It was followed by Pharaoh Khafre’s construction of a second pyramid and Pharaoh Menkaure’s construction of a third pyramid, The three pyramids are surrounded by temples, smaller tombs, and the Great Sphinx. The diagram above was drawn during an 1837 research expedition of the pyramids at Giza. It shows the King’s chamber and Queen’s chamber connected by a great passage as well as an entrance and the subterrain level. The picture of the Great Pyramid’s entrance was drawn during the same 1837 expedition.
