sci-universe:On 1st June, I defended my Bachelor thesis “Behavioral Study of the Yellow Hypergiant HR 8752 [N II] Emission Line at 6583 Å”. The thesis is in Estonian but we’re planning a paper about the intriguing results about this star’s behaviour with my supervisor. Here’s the abstract:HR 8752 is a yellow hypergiant, which went through significant changes in 30 years. There is aprominent forbidden nitrogen emission line in its spectrum at 6583 Å, whose equivalent widthdecreased in 1961–1976 and increased linearly in 1976–1992. For the given study, the spectraldata of HR 8752 from 2000–2017 is reduced in order to analyze the equivalent width and in turn, the star’s behavior. Data reduction comprises a standard process with the software IRAF andcontinuum-normalizing each spectrum. According to the results, the equivalent width continuesto increase, but not linearly. In 1992–2000, the equivalent width grew much faster than before, which indicates the decrease of the star’s red-band brightness and the rise of the star’s effectivetemperature to be more rapid. By contrast, in 2000–2017, the growth of the equivalent widthbecame slower, and therefore the changes in brightness and temperature also became slower.Equivalent width is a parameter, which describes the area of a spectral line. The star I researched has a great Wikipedia page and so do yellow hypergiants. In conclusion… -- source link
