agentelmo: “Brick wall? Go ahead. Change your life.” —Maurice, The Ghosts Who Stole Christmas. (6x06) I love the psychological symbolism of this episode. I am starting to wonder if I should flit around a bit a do analysis on episodes that interest me rather than just going chronologically. I will have a think about it. But I love this episode for two reasons. 1. Mulder stealing Scully’s car keys because he wants to spend time with her, and can’t do it like a normal fucking human being by just asking her. 2. Because of the symbolic brick wall. After Mulder and Scully are separated in this episode, a brick wall appears for both of them that prevents them from reuniting. The brick wall is their symbolic barrier that keeps them apart from each other - trapped in their respective loneliness. But why? It’s pretty clear at this point that they love each other in more than a platonic way. Neither of them can walk through the wall - Maurice tells Mulder he’s narcissistic and self-righteous, and Lyda tells Scully she’s codependent on Mulder and full of conflicted yearnings - until these unconscious driving forces are resolved, the wall between them will remain. Arguably, Scully’s issues (and thus symbolic brick wall) aren’t resolved until All Things and Mulder’s probably not until Essence/Existance. In a weird round about way, Maurice and Lyda are giving them couples therapy! haha Maurice suggests to Mulder that Scully is behind the wall, and when Mulder tells Maurice that he wants to find Scully, Maurice tells him to walk through the wall - that walking through the wall will change his life. YEP. He tries to walk through, and we’ve seen him figuratively try several times before. The aborted kiss in Fight the Future, the confession of love in Triangle… But he smacks right back into the wall. No matter what he does, he can’t seem to break out and meet her on the other side because of his unconscious motivations getting in the way - he’s so absorbed in his quest, his search for The Truth™ that he fails to see what’s right in front of him. Don’t worry Mulder, you get there in the end. -- source link
