Some males will secrete a ‘fake’ female pheromone to make males think they are a female and crowd them in a mating ball. If he came out of brumation late, this is beneficial because he is essentially ‘stealing’ the heat from the other males that already thermoregulated. Once they do this they get warmed quickly and distract the males from emerging females, giving him an opportunity to switch back to a male pheromone and dash over to mate with the emerging females before the other males.
