I worked on a Tarot series for the last fandom I was active in but doing a similar series seems redundant given Escaflowne is the king of Tarot motif and influence. Anyway, here’s my two cents on Van and why I’m illustrating him as the Six of Swords. The Six of Swords (Rider Waite-Smith) invokes transition, life changes and rites of passage which are fitting for Van, since we meet him slaying a dragon in the first episode to accomplish such a task. According to the wiki he’s an Aries, so I avoided the water imagery seen in the Waite-Smith card. I think a “fiery” sunset will tune into the fire sign better than literal flames since he’s not a destructive person. When reading Tarot I like to include basic numerology- The 6 can be interpreted as “As Above, So Below”- Van is hot-headed but not without compassion and empathy. His destiny is all about finding balance and harmony in the face of overwhelming chaos. -- source link
