Going to a maid cafe in Akihabara this summer was an amazing experience and one that I definitely won’t be forgetting any time soon.  It had been something that had been on our list of things to do in Japan for months so when we went to Akihabara for the first time and saw maids standing on the sidewalk every couple of blocks to promote their cafes, we nearly died of excitement. After convincing a couple of our other group members to go with us, we approached one of the adorable girls and she excitedly directed us to take the elevator to the third floor of the building. The inside of the first floor and the elevator that we stepped into were completely nondescript, but the moment that the elevator door opened it was like we were entering a completely different world. An enthusiastic “konichiwa!!” was shouted by all of the waitresses in total harmony and everything thing in the small cafe was pink, aside from the girls’ navy maid uniforms, and kawaii. There was an atmosphere of pure cuteness that I had never experienced before in my life and we all couldn’t help but smile like crazy. Our waitress, who was sporting cat ears, a tail, and a bell, led us over to our table and handed us menus that were brimming with the most adorable edible creations you could imagine. I decided to get omuraisu because in one of my favorite anime, Steins;Gate, the characters got omuraisu at a maid cafe and when the maid brought it out to them, she drew a cat on it with ketchup. The whole time we were waiting for out food I was thinking, “OMG if she draws a cat on it in ketchup I won’t even know what to do” and when the moment of truth came and she placed the plate in front of me, I nearly lost it when she actually pulled out a ketchup bottle and drew a little kitty on my omelet. About midway through our meal, the lights dimmed and a spotlight was turned on to a small stage in the corner of the room. The maids took turns lip syncing and dancing to different songs on the stage and it was really amazing! I was so awed by their ability to seem so enthusiastic and cheerful throughout the whole show because, whether they were just acting their parts or it was genuine, all of the girls just seemed so happy. One thing that really excited me during the show was recognizing a couple of the songs as Hatsune Miku songs and one of them as “Renai Circulation” from Bakemonogatari. The whole performance was really fun to watch and a swear I have never smiled so hard and for so long in my entire life.  The whole experience was a bit expensive, but we all really had a great time and I wouldn’t go back and change it for the world. It was definitely an awesome way to start our month in Japan and I would recommend that everyone go to a maid cafe at least once in their lives :) -- source link
