Hi there! This little critter is the black-footed ferret. This endangered species was thought to be extinct until a small population was found in Wyoming. Since that discovery, the U.S. has gradually attempted to nurse the species back to some level of health by introducing it to 28 different sites in the US. This little one was brought to Wind Cave National Park after being raised in Colorado, and is now thought to have helped bring the population in that park up to 25 to 30 individuals. These ferrets are nocturnal, rarely appearing during the day, and mostly feed on prairie dogs. Prairie dogs are important food sources for a number of species, but tend to frustrate farmers because they clear large spaces around their dens. Reintroducing this species, therefore, also works as a type of population control for a species that farmers consider a pest.-JBBImage credit: NPShttps://www.nps.gov/wica/learn/news/11212016pr.htmReference:http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/~cns3/SlobodchikoffSemantics1991.pdf -- source link
