Bering Glacier (Alaska, USA) where it terminates in Vitus Lake.North America’s largest and longest glacier is the Bering Glacier inAlaska, which is 190km long. It covers an area of about 5,200 squarekilometres – about 6% of the total glacier-covered regions inAlaska. But like many other glaciers around the world, the Bering Glacier isretreating. Warmer temperatures and changes in precipitation hasthinned the glacier by several hundred metres. Since 1900, theglacier’s terminus (lower right of this photo) has retreated as muchas 12km. Melting glaciers contribute to raised global sea levels, could endanger freshwater supplies in countries downstream of theHimalayas and elsewhere, and can even cause earthquakes. -- source link
