holahydra: #the shield going through the sofa #gets me every time This weird appearing motion where the shield looks like it’s going through the sofa, well, fifteen years of 1860s costuming and reenacting finally have a use other than roaming around looking pretty in really wide skirts. :) I’ve actually had to do this kind of action when moving my collapsed (flattened down into a single layer, round shape) late 1850s early 1860s cage crinoline. Now, a cage crinoline - for those who don’t know them - are increasingly wide rings of steel banding held together vertically by wide bands of canvas or bias tape. When you aren’t actually wearing them, they naturally collapse down to a single layer which is actually a bit larger than Steve’s shield. Because they are made of steel rings - if you get an authentic one made - you can stand them on end and prop them against things. I once had one leaning against the front of a long sofa while packing up for the week-long Battle of Gettysburg reenactment. When I left the house to load the truck, I grabbed it by one side and, while walking forward, swung the hoop along the front of the sofa by that side. It scraped the front cushions as it came up off the floor, almost tripped me as I stepped forward, and then I swung it in front of me so I could make sure I didn’t hit anything. The only thing Chris does in this shot that I didn’t, is swing the shield all the way around onto his back - and damn did I wish I thought of that as a way to carry the darned thing around on packing days! -- source link
