magpieartistsensemble: Magpie is primarily a theatre-based company, and as such, we ask ourselves the traditional question at the start of every creative process: Why this story? Why now? In lieu of a director’s note, we thought we’d share author James T. Washburn’s thoughts on the timeliness and significance of a story like Sealed with Honey:“Sealed with Honey was born out of a very simple, and I think universal, drive: the need to be seen. When I watch or read historical romances, while I enjoy them every time, I often find myself struggling to relate or wondering where the queer characters are. I came of age in fandom, headcanoning and genderbending and self-inserting my way to the representation I craved; but I think that queer people deserve something more than that. And that’s a core element of this story in the text, as well - Gabriel and Simon are both waiting, in their own ways, for someone to truly see them for the first time. …Which brings us to the ‘Why now?’ part of the question. We are living in a time when almost everyone is starved for connection. Getting mail from friends and relatives has been a high point of the pandemic - something tangible that proves that my people are out there, and that someone has been thinking of me. I want to bring a little of that light to our readers with the format of this project, a guaranteed moment to look forward to every two weeks.”Join us for this unique storytelling experience, exclusively available through our Kickstarter during Pride month (June 1-30). -- source link
