littleoases:June is the start of Pride month. This year, I am thinking especially of my queer Black friends, who must constantly navigate the intersection of at least two marginalized identities that are often the target of police brutality. (51 years ago, queer & trans Black women led the Stonewall riots to protest the police’s violent raids of queer bars. This is what people mean when they say “Never forget the first Pride was a riot.”) In honor of queer Black voices, here’s a spread of some of my favorite queer Black books. The commitment to becoming anti-racist can and does include reading fiction, because it’s perhaps the easiest and most effective way to put ourselves in others’ shoes. If hatred and bigotry are borne of the stories we are told, then it’s on us to find stories that rewire those beliefs into empathy and advocacy. You can order these books through Bookshop. Happy Pride! Happy reading! I’ve been silent here cause the time I’m spending online these days I’m on Twitter trying to share info and the work of Black artists, but I thought I should say something here too just to make it clear: Black Lives Matters! And Happy Pride!Read some nice books while we’re at it. -- source link
