arelativenewcomer:Tanaka Ryohei was born in 1933 in Takatsuki in the Osaka Prefecture. His work, characterised by exceptional care for detail and restrained use of colour, consists chiefly of etchings; he also works with other mediums such as aquatint or mezzotint. In 1970, he executed illustrations for the novel A Foolʼs Life by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa [see some of the illustrations here].Ryohei is interested mostly in depicting the Japanese countryside, with its traditional architecture and the characteristic bond of human creation with nature. [For more details about the artist and his work, see here; for more images, see here.]Although technically much different from shin hanga prints, Ryoheiʼs art manages to capture the very same silence and solitude of the places which stubbornly resist the passage of time.Top to bottom, left to right: Crow and Persimmon in the Snow, 2008 [source]; Persimmons, 2005 [source]; Persimmons and Mountain, 2005 [source]; Great Ginko Tree (3), 2011 [source]; The Entrance (Hyakusaiji), 2003 [source]; Kyoto #34.
