Day 27 of 31 days of my favorite scary movies is the 2008 sci-fi found footage style monster movie Cloverfield. I grew up watching late-night kaiju movies on cable (Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, you name it), so I’m already favorably disposed to the genre. I had always wanted to see a giant monster movie more from the perspective of civilians who have no idea what’s going on when the creature shows up stomping all over their city, and with Cloverfiled J.J. Abrams delivered in spades. There are no long-winded explanations from “scientists” speculating about the origin and motives of the monster, and no tense command room scenes where military types decide how to deal with it and how many civilian causalities are acceptable. Instead Cloverfield chooses to focus on a small group of friends with a handheld camera desperately trying to survive as an improbably huge monster stomps around Manhattan. Sure there are parts of Cloverfield that are likely to push at the limits of your credulity, but the overall effect is tense, fun, and exciting. The movie has just the right amount of slow build before the reveal, and while not all of the performances are spot-on, there is enough decent acting to keep things grounded. -- source link
