waywardglittercat: vixyish: forget-no-sleep: FINALLY One of the things I like about this: they’re doing it without shouting down women. Because “that doesn’t happen to guys” *IS* a feminist issue. Male victims of abuse being dismissed, blamed or ridiculed because they weren’t “manly” enough is a part of patriarchy. And you can raise awareness of that without dismissing other feminist issues or bringing it up as a “counter argument” to problems women face. MRAs, take note. This is how you actually support men’s rights. All victims of sexual abuse deserve compassion and support. Wow, I knew men were affected too but the statistics I saw were things like “1 in 33 men get raped or are victims of attempted rape” and that “10% of rape victims are men.”This encouraged me to look more into it. A big thing to mention is that sexual abuse and rape are different, so there could be truth within both statistics. I don’t know if it’s 1 in 6, but holy crap sexual abuse towards men is way more common than I thought. A lot of them don’t even consider it abuse, only 16% did when a social worker was on their case which means it was pretty serious. I can hardly believe we let so many men get victimized and have indoctrinated this rape culture so deep that they often can’t recognize that they’re subject to abuse. I’ve always thought it important to include men and women in conversations about victims of rape, sexual abuse, and domestic violence. But now I know while women may be more likely to actually get raped, we really need to focus on every kind of victim and not consider male victims as just part of the conversation. We wouldn’t consider female victims as simply part of it, instead they often are the conversation. I thought that was rightfully so, but no. Everyone needs to know what abuse looks like, the red flags, and what to do when they’re caught up in it. I got all this information from https://1in6.org/get-information/the-1-in-6-statistic/ excluding the commonly known rape stats from RAINN. -- source link
