221bloodnun:Nothing to Edit or How Lestrade Helps the Editing ProcessLook at the sequence as it plays out. Lestrade pushes a button on the recorder before they discuss how John hit Sherlock hard. All that is actually recorded appears to be the part where Sherlock initially went after Culverton with the scalpel (which is a repeat of content from another episode). They talk about seeing this coming, and what happened in HLV.The part where John is beating up Sherlock, isn’t being stated aloud. It’s in John’s mind (or Sherlock’s, if this is his mind making up details/editing them). We see it play out, while Lestrade and John are watching Culverton talk about what happened on the other MET person’s laptop, and afterward. The image above is what the recorder looks like when they are watching the laptop. That is, when the recorder even shows up. In certain angles, where it should be visible, it also disappears (like light fixtures, furniture, and John himself in TLD & TFP). Notice the tile work on the wall in the top image vs the one below. The edge of the table in the beginning of the sequence doesn’t start by Lestrade until the third strip of dark green. The recorder should be in alignment with the light fixture, but no…it’s just gone. Also gone are the little black knobs with wires that were connected to the table top. Culverton says he doesn’t know what happened, and won’t be pressing charges. Well, that was easy. After they finish watching, John begins confessing to hitting Sherlock, but Lestrade doesn’t turn on the recorder and there are no numbers to show that anything is in process. It’s not until this part, where we actually see John beating Sherlock. By which point, the puddle is gone, because this is being edited as we go along through the person’s mind. Or…It’s the memory of John hitting Lestrade’s boss in TRF, after which John is arrested along with Sherlock. Or…It’s also memories of Sherlock telling John to punch him in order to carry out the plan with Irene, and John begins getting carried away. Irene does state the shade is “blood” ANDIn HLV, Sherlock lets John fill in the blanks on what would happen if you went into a secure location, without proper clearance. -- source link
