License: Public Domain.The Sanctuary of Artemis at Brauron, around 38 kn from Athens, was established in the 9th or 8th century BCE. The earliest temple dedicated to Artemis at the site has been dated to the 6th century BCE. Little girls from Athens, perhaps chosen from elite families, were sent to Brauron to serve as attendants of the goddess for a term of one year, in preparation for puberty and marriage. “O Lovely One [Artemis], you are so gracious to the tender whelps of fierce lions, and take delight in the suckling young of every wild creature that roams the field.“ - Aeschylus, Agamemnon 140 ff , 5th century BCE (trans.
