Guys next year we have serious work to do. Get out and elect an anti trump house and senate, thats step 1. DO IT I watch two of my students go around and collect the extra sandwiches and milks leftover from after school to bring home so that they have food for dinner and breakfast. They have done this every week for the last three years. I’ve even seen former students do this when they come to school to visit. Even growing teenagers don’t want extra cheese sandwiches unless they’re really hungry. This is not hyperbole. After school programs are saving the lives of children. No child should be going hungry in this country. Check the public library! A lot have programs, especially if they are close to schools. Some of the programs also include food. This also doesn’t have to be a thing folks wait until elections for. The rules about school boards vary across the country. Often enough, you don’t need a child in school to participate. (Some of the most notorious districts are dominated by school boards led by childless adults.) What this means is, figure out if you can make the meetings, if not, you can often request minutes and participate outside of meetings. There’s usually committees and caucuses for different projects and efforts. Moreover, GET INVOLVED IN YOUR SCHOOL DISTRICTS. Yes public schools have to work within the law, but they’re also open to direct pressure from communities. Note: I don’t take any of this lightly. These aren’t suggestions that I think are super easy, but it sure as shit is more tangible than appealing to politicians. If you struggle with the energy to get involved, give whatever energy to local politics. It is the most likely to cause change. Even a phone call to someone who is doing fucked up shit (or encouragement to people who are rocking it!) can have a huge impact. Letters or emails can also be powerful. Donations - no matter how little - are huge. There are things that can be done in your home. These aren’t necessarily easy but at least you leave don’t have to leave your house. -- source link
