requiem-fields:74.0_Kyoto_ASRU_GeishasBoth maiko (Kansai apprentice geisha ) pictured here unfortunately quit the profession before they finished their apprenticeships. The maiko on the left was named Takahiro; the other one was Takamari. They were from the same okiya and had the same mentor, from whom they inherited the first part of their professional artist’s names. These names were given to them when they made their debuts as maiko; naturally, Takahiro and Takamari had to give up their artistical names when they quit. Maybe someday, a new maiko named Takahiro or Takamari will make her debut as a Kyoto maiko. -- source link
