This afternoon I had my first ever helicopter ride out to the beautiful Cape Royds penguin colony, to fully put in camp here. We spent the afternoon unpacking food, digging out a freezer (all you need is a bank of snow, a shovel and a cooler), installing the propane heater in the science tent, and cooking dinner over a Coleman stove. After dinner I spent an hour just wandering and sitting in the penguin colony. It is one of the quietest placed I have ever been, save the ACK ACK ACK of the penguins doing egg swaps, and the lapping of the ocean against the volcanic shores. One aspect hard to capture in still photography is the cartoon googly-eyes of the Adelie penguin, which is in constant circling motion and perpetually makes me burst out laughing, but I think the top photo comes close! -- source link
