The species itself is native to southern North American and northern South America. The peppers ripen from black/purple to red. The peppers are edible but, according to Dave’s Garden, they are 30,000+ Scoville units hot. Other peppers of comparable Scoville unit scores are Cayenne pepper and Tabasco pepper.
