Lancaster Castle and Witch Trail marker. The marker features an extract of the Pendle Witch Trial poem by Carol Ann Duffy. Ten people were trialled and executed for Witchcraft at Lancaster Castle in 1612. The final image is of the ‘Short Drop’ Room at the castle where 200 executions took place, the last in 1865 for murder. It is thought those put on trial for witchcraft were hung in public on nearby moorland. The hanging ‘short drop’ method is thought more painful than the more humane ‘long drop’ method which typically results in a broken neck. The former often leads to strangulation and a protracted death. -- source link
