dabsplosion: turntechgodoka: m1sosazai: purified-zone: elanorpam: turntechgodoka: Homestuck ending theory: Caliborn wrote everything post-retcon That’s why everyone has their problems waved away off-screen, except for The Alpha Male. That’s why the characters had their journeys wiped away and replaced with only a rush-to-the-end. That’s why the combosprites were presented in a positive light. That’s why Jane got nothing. Considering how they seem to have basically created the Earth the Calitwins would eventually populate, I’d say… yes. They played right into his hand. The story isn’t over, it just stopped being Homestuck. Please wait a moment. I find several things here pretty troubling. Questionable. I agree with the Jane part—that definitely makes sense. The total lack of importance placed on her personal quest up until the very end is appalling and only seems to call back to Caliborn’s complete disinterest in her as a character. In that sense it’s pretty fitting that The End pretty much ruined the life of my friend, Jane, on that day. She was trembling with anger and crying after Act 7 was finished. I don’t think I’d feel as strongly about this if I didn’t see how much it hurt her. 1. Why would Caliborn, the absurd space imp bent on omnicidal domination, be invested in creating a… happy ending where he loses (in one way or another)? The only people that the ending inconveniences are the readers, and maybe Lord English himself.2. On combosprites: aside from some of Jasprosesprite^2′s advances, what was wrong with the combosprites? What exactly is wrong with Davepetasprite^2? Caliborn’s loss is more implied - I mean, we didn’t actually SEE the kids beat him, at all. (Some people have even speculated that the Caliborn who created the ‘Masterpiece’ wasn’t even the Lord English who rose to power.) We saw them yank the house juju away from Lord English and go into the new universe. We never saw any kind of showdown between the kids and Caliborn like the Claymation suggested. It’s been suggested that maybe they fight him in the future, when they’re stronger, but that’s still another loose end unresolved. For now, he’s still in suspended animation, and not really ‘beaten’ so much as circumvented. As for Davepetasprite^2, being merged into a horrific combo-person and just hugging ARquiusprite is pretty much the shittiest resolution and cop-out to Davesprite’s whole storyline where he feels inferior to the alpha Dave and wants to be acknowledged as real and mattering in his own right. And it does injustice to Nepeta’s inferiority complex, too. I mean, really? A mindset like “I don’t matter and I wish I could just disappear because none of my friends are really ‘my friends’ anymore”, and Nepeta’s feeling sad and insecure, and the problem’s resolved by merging the two into a single person? Which somehow makes them happy instead of awkward and having their sadness magnified by having to deal with the other half’s (i.e. Davesprite suddenly being involved in Nepeta’s, and Nepeta suddenly being aware of Davesprite’s) set of problems? What was with the whole ‘ultimate self’ speech Davepetasprite^2 gave to Jade? It’s completely contrary to the previous message Davesprite sent, about acknowledging how alt selves mattered and were different people from the ‘alpha’ selves. And there was this whole spiel about them feeling like they wanted to fight Lord English, and making it seem like Davesprite - even if it wasn’t really Davesprite anymore - was FINALLY going to make a tangible difference (besides the whole going back in time and saving John’s butt) after hanging around and moping for ages. And Davepetasprite^2 barely slowed down Lord English, was hardly even a distraction, as cool as the Undertale shoutout was. Also, the meeting with ARquiusprite? Okay, Equius and Nepeta may have been moirails, but AR was an alt version of Dirk who was an alt version of Bro, and Davesprite didn’t know Dirk, much less AR, so is probably confusing him for Bro, and AR sees the Dave part of Davepetasprite^2 as the famous movie director from his universe, so it’s inflated expectations all around that are bound to be shattered as soon as they get to know each other, if at all. The combosprites are really just a glorified way of running away from interpersonal problems (Rose from her dead girlfriend and also destroyed timeline, Jaspers from being unable to save Rose, in addition to Dave and Nepeta’s issues), and what did Jasprosesprite^2 even really do? Absolutely nothing, aside from harassing people and maybe teleporting people around in the battle. So they made no tangible difference to the storyline in addition to being terrible character resolution and furthering the sense of shitty storytelling. :D Yes. Beautiful. I wrote up a huge reply and slept on it and now here you are making so many of my points (and interesting stuff I never even thought of!) so I don’t have to. I just gotta add a few thoughts because the combo sprites get so. much. worse. if you also dig into the meta surrounding them. 1. Combosprites share an unsettling numbers of traits with Tricksters. They were created out of people who were either actively resisting or had no idea what was happening (no agency), they’re fixated on sex/romance and don’t care about other people’s boundaries (non-con smooches), and they claim to have removed all their problems just by virtue of their colorful new existence. The Tricksters were presented as unequivocally a Bad Thing that stunted the alpha kids’ character growth. 2. A neglected female character finally returns to the narrative after spending all of Act 6 in total silence, only to get smashed together with a version of fandom’s favorite spotlight-hogging male character. A neglected female character’s narrative purpose now boils down to “playing a Strider’s emotional crutch.” 3. Davesprite has spent the majority of the comic considering himself inferior, wallowing in depression, and getting screamed at by John to just disappear. What kind of message does it send to resolve his character arc by ripping away his very identity? The depressed character could only find “happiness” by ceasing to exist? John was right to turn hostile on a “fake” Dave? 4. Homestuck has a strong pattern of characters going “Everything is fine, I’m happiest this way” who are explicitly shown to be completely off their rocker (drunk Lalondes, Tricksters, grimdark/grimbark/crockertier). There’s no reason to believe that the combo sprites are any more sincere in their so-called happiness. In fact, Davepeta cheerfully tells us upfront that the Dave part of themselves is having a “brain tantrum” of “no no no stop STOP STOP” and yet we’re supposed to believe that they’re not lying through their teeth when they say they’re the best thing to ever happen to Davesprite. He is screaming in their mind while they just laugh at his agony. They dismiss all of his past issues as irrelevant. They call him a douche. They pretty clearly hate Davesprite, probably because he’s the only thing trying to rain on their happy little parade of denial. I’d like to add a few points. Hussie, the author, is dead in-canon. Caliborn was starting to take over the command prompts. He was learning how to draw manga and people compare the act 7 to an anime. If he wanted to create a stable time loop he’d have to have the kids win the game so his session actually exists. He got dust in the homestuck cartridge (John blew it away but bear with me). There’s a scene in Act 7 that directly parallels Caliborn’s drawing of getting his powers. Caliborn created act 7 and events that led to it. he learned how to draw “manga” and learned how to animate with claymation. he ensured the kids won the game and trapped the B1 kids in the end (since he was still the artist for those events). at the end of act 6 act 6 and just before act 7, hussie’s ghost (death of the author and all that) decides to take out LE and take control of his comic again. That’s why the juju returns and LE’s defeat is implied, some influence from the true author before he ends the comic and LE’s existence with it. -- source link
