eorwyn: YORUBA GODDESSES AND GODS //// Yemaya / Yemanjá Yemaya, also known as Yemanjá is the Yorùbá Orisha (Deity) of the Sea. Her name is a contraction of Yey Omo Eja, which means “Mother Whose Children are the Fish”. Yemaya makes her residence in life-giving portion of the ocean. She is the mother of all living things, rules over motherhood and owns all the waters of the Earth. She gave birth to the stars, the moon, the sun and most of the orishas; As all life is thought to have begun in the sea, all life is held to have begun with Yemaya. She is motherly and strongly protective, and cares deeply for all Her children, comforting them and cleansing them of sorrow. Yemaya is just as much a loving mother orisha as she is a fierce warrior; She does not easily lose Her temper, but when angered She can be quite destructive and violent, as the sea in a storm. -- source link
